Poker is a game of skill and strategy that involves betting on the strength of one’s hand of cards. Although there are many different variations of the game, they all have some things in common: players must place forced bets (the ante and blind) before being dealt cards; there are usually multiple rounds of betting; and the player with the best hand wins.<\/p>\n
Generally, the game is played with chips. Each player has a certain amount of chips that they must “buy in” for at the beginning of each round of betting. These chips are usually valued in units of whites, reds, and blues, with each chip worth a specific amount. A white chip, for example, is usually worth one white; a red is worth five whites; and a blue is worth ten or twenty whites.<\/p>\n
Before each round of betting, the dealer shuffles and cuts the cards; then each player receives their two personal hands of five cards. During the betting interval that follows, players may discard and replace their cards.<\/p>\n
During a betting round, a player can “call” a previous player’s bet by placing the same number of chips into the pot. Alternatively, they can say “raise” to add more to the betting pool. If a player cannot match or raise a bet, they must say “drop” and fold their cards.
